About the chair

The chair materials handling, material flow, logistics (fml) at the faculty machine engineering at the Technical University of Munich can look back to over 100 years of history. This is reflected in a widespread research profile which ranges from traditional fields of work such as the conveying of bulk goods and crane construction to the usage of innovative technologies like RFID and augmented reality. All focuses of research share a high practical orientation and the use of modern methods and tools. Currently the chair employs just under 50 research assistants and 8 non-teaching staff and has an own workshop in which apprentices are trained.

The faculty mechanical engineering is located at the research campus Garching north of Munich, which can comfortably reached with the local U-Bahn U6 or the freeway exit ramp “Garching Nord” of the A9 Munich -  Berlin.

Munich itself is one of the most popular cities of Germany. „The biggest village of the world“ allures due to its varied possibilities as a cultural, economical and academic center in the south of Germany as well as its diverse recreational possibilites.

Work environment and remuneration

In the young and dynamic  team at the chair fml a cooperative and open working climate as well as mutual appreciation and recognition prevail. Family-friendly vacation and leaves of absences allow for extremely flexible and self-determined work. Furthermore the Ingeborg-Ordner Kinderhaus, which opened in 2010, right next to the faculty, offers the care of children ages one to six.

At the beginning the employment and remuneration via the employment as a research assistant in the labor contract of the public Federal State in Bavaria as a whole position. The public collective bargaining also allows for a payment of Christmas money as well as capital-forming benefits. Usually you will obtain a limited contract of employment, whereby an employment time of 4-5 years is guaranteed with the possibility of a doctorate. On the pages of the faculty for mechanical engineering, you can obtain information for the preconditions for a doctorate at fml e.g. as a graduate of a science-oriented degree or a college.

Tasks and training measures 

As work tasks you can expect activities in the area of research and industrial projects as well as in teaching. An independent and autonomous project work in the research and industrial projects guarantees a personal advancement, whereby functional and methodical support is guaranteed by the internal coaching of the experienced project managers. The processing of the research projects is conducted via the allocation to one of the internal subject groups. You have the possibility to present your results and interact with colleagues at national and international congresses. With your tasks you can establish a first contact with industrial partners as well as obtain leadership qualifications by the guidance of student assistants as well as the supervision of student research projects. Therefore, you obtain a high degree of scope for action and actively shape your field of research.

The mutual determination of concise employee aims for the personal development and the planned activities of the coming year are conducted in yearly talks about aim agreements. By means of the offered seminars and advanced training measures offered by the TUM Graduate School or the internal advanced training of the Technical University of Munich (WIMES), a generic advanced training and qualification (e.g. leadership- rhetoric seminars) of your personality is possible. Furthermore, a mentoring program of the Technical University of Munich exists which enables further exchange with people from industry and provides new insights. Additionally, a career-building for female engineers is offered.
